Continuing on our quest to get out and about in the area, last weekend we had a trip to the Llanthony Show. Llanthony is a small village in the Ewyas valley, deep in the Black Mountains. Three years ago we fell in love with this area when we had our first holiday in a small, converted barn here. We spent the weekend walking on the Offa’s Dyke Path, marvelling at the sense of isolation this part of the world offers, despite being only ten miles or so from Abergavenny.
The show was an eclectic mix of horse events, dog show (‘most appealing eyes’), local produce, fell race, craft and, later in the afternoon, their very own rodeo. We ate cakes from the WI stall, and drank local beers from the Wye Valley. There was a donkey with the silkiest nose. The high point, however, had to be the organisers’ attempts to get into the Guinness Book of Records for the most couples in a three legged race. The final count? 280 couples, legs tied together, running across a large field in Wales. Not quite the record, but the challenge has been set for 2015. We’ll be back next year, with our own string.
