Last weekend was the Abergavenny Food Festival, our annual food extravaganza. The festival has been taking place for a number of years now and has gained an international reputation, but it’s the first time we’ve visited. Our little local town was completely transformed – market stalls covered every inch of the streets and car parks, cookery demonstrations were taking place in the Masonic Hall and Borough Theatre, Radio 4’s Kitchen Cabinet with Jay Rayner was recorded here, and every type of food and cuisine imaginable was represented. We learned how to cure salmon, smoke your own duck, mix cocktails from back garden ingredients with local potato vodka, make an authentic pilau (and why not to say ‘pilau rice’) and enjoyed one of the best meals at the Foxhunter, Nantyderry.
